m/other becomings – exhibition
Bioart Society
2021-2022

m/other becomings is an international and multilayered curatorial platform for Bioart Society’s Arc-hive exhibition case study. On top of the exhibition, the Bioart Society collaborated with different organisations and actors during 2021-2022 on various activities relating to the m/other becomings project, which will also be covered in this case study.

The program, realised by the Bioart Society, included: the production of two artworks produced during 2021 and 2022, a student course with Aalto University (including a series of 6 lectures, 4 of which were public online lectures), during November-December 2021, a 5-day wet-lab workshop with 15 participants, two exhibitions with a total of 6 artists, and a 2-day on-site and online symposium with 11 contributors with a 3-day workshop at the Theatre Academy Helsinki before the symposium. Within the m/other becomings project, the Bioart Society collaborated with students from the MA program in Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art of the Aalto University during the course Trans-Institutional Experiments and Collaborations in fall 2021, as well as with the Aalto University Biogarage and Biofilia laboratories, and the Aalto Design Factory.

m/other becomings cultivates intergenerational and multispecies methodologies, makes space for the investigation of domestic resistance practices, and probes technologies of reproduction, resilience, and recuperation. These practices manifest as durational collaborations between experimental cultural institutions, artists, and thinkers. m/other becomings is a collaboration between Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology (DK) (lead organisation of the institutional network), The Association for Arts and Mental Health (DK), Kultivator (SE), Art Lab Gnesta (SE), and Bioart Society (FI).
